The 2018 BYU Chit-Chat Challenge (the "Competition") is sponsored by BYU's Perception, Control and Cognition Laboratory ("Sponsor") for the purpose of gathering sample conversations that can be used as training data for neural networks and other machine learning algorithms. Contest participants chat with each other online, and their anonymized conversations will become part of a data archive that may, at Sponsor's discretion, be made available to researchers worldwide.
By participating in the Competition, you (the "Entrant") agree to these Official Rules. Please read them carefully.
To be eligible to enter the Competition, you must: (1) be enrolled as a full or part-time student and Brigham Young University, and (2) be at or above the age of majority in your country, state, province or jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry. Directors, officers, employees, interns and contractors ("Personnel") of Sponsor, immediate family members of such Personnel (parents, siblings, spouses, and life partners of each) and members of the households of such Personnel (whether related or not) are ineligible to participate in this Competition, although they may choose to support the Chit-Chat Challenge by submitting conversations without being eligible for prizes. Sponsor reserves the right to verify eligibility and to adjucate on any dispute at any time.
Competition Entrants may begin submitting conversations at 5:00 PM Mountain Time on September 14, 2018 and may submit as many conversations as they choose during the lifetime of the competition. Conversations will be scored based on a metric determined by Sponsor, at Sponsor's sole discretion, which accounts for such factors as (a) the length of the conversation, (b) the eloquence of the conversation, (c) the appropriateness of the conversation for the Sponsor's research purposes, (d) the ratings given by competition Entrants to each other, and (e) the sincerity and good-faith participation of the Entrant.
By entering the Competition, Entrant agrees that at no time during the competition will they:
Sponsor will award one (1) iPad Pro to the chatter with the highest score on each of the following dates. (The exact time of the award remains to be determined, and may vary for each prize distribution.)
Participants are eligible to receive only one iPad Pro. After each prize is awarded, all scores will be cleared and the next round of competition will commence.
On November 16, 2018 (exact time to be determined), Sponsor will raffle off one (1) Macbook Pro using a random lottery. Entrant may earn raffle tickets by accruing points during each round of competition. For the competition round ending on October 5, 2018, all chatters with 300,000 or more points will receive a raffle ticket. Point threshholds for earning raffle tickets in future competition rounds will be announced by Sponsor at the beginning of each round.
Raffle tickets will be assigned virtually. No physical ticket will be distributed; rather, Sponsor will maintain a list of all chatters who have earned tickets, and will use that list to randomly select a winner.
Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify Entrant for any reason including but not limited to (a) hacking, (b) cheating, (c) dishonest ratings given to others, (d) ratings that are not justified by the content of the conversation, (e) rules violations, or (f) excessive poor sportsmanship. Top Entrants on the leaderboard agree that their chat transcripts and ratings will be examined by members of the Perception, Control and Cognition Laboratory before awards are disbursed.
RELEASE OF CONTENT:
By participating in this Competition, Entrant agrees that any and all text, statements, ideas, or unique concepts (the "Content") submitted via the ChitChat Competition website shall be released into the public domain for use as part of a conversational dataset used in training neural networks and other machine learning algorithms. Entrant affirms that the Content does not contain libelous material or infringe upon the rights of any third party, and further agrees that the anonymized Content may be made publicly available without any further reward or remuneration to Entrant beyond the prizes offered as part of this Competition. For lack of ambiguity: As the Entrant, you acknowledge that you are donating your words to science, for public release to researchers and others throughout the world.
Except where prohibited, Entrant agrees that: (1) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Competition or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (2) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Competition, but in no event attorneys’ fees; and (3) under no circumstances will Entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and Entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, indirect, punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages (other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses), and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the Entrant and Sponsor in connection with the Competition, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of Utah without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the State of Utah or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of Utah.
